Jhoel Centeno
DRAMA THERAPY INTERN
(He/Him) Jhoel Centeno, holds a bachelor’s degree in theatre and is currently a graduate student in the Drama Therapy program at NYU.
Jhoel provides drama therapy services for adults, children, couples, and older adults, with a special focus on LGBTQIA+ communities, creating an affirming space for self-expression, identity exploration, and emotional healing. His work also intersects with sex therapy, integrating drama therapy techniques to support clients in navigating intimacy, relationships, loss, and personal growth through creative and embodied approaches. He has had experience as an Evaluation Coordinator through the Early Intervention program of New York. Before entering the world of drama therapy, Jhoel was actively involved in the theatrical community working with community theatres and off-off Broadway productions.
He has worked remotely with AHRC, a program based in New York City that helps provide support for individuals with developmental disabilities. He carried on this work in person through an internship in Mendoza, Argentina visiting a day center serving people with developmental disabilities for a month, as well as theatrical groups serving older adults and a psychiatric care facility. He currently is working on providing care for a group of older adults living with Parkinson’s disease via Zoom, providing the nuances of drama and virtual care.
Jhoel believes in the importance of healing through the arts and the space needed for narratives to be told. He firmly believes in the importance of telling stories and listening to the stories being told. He is passionate about building a therapeutic alliance that builds onto the importance and sacredness of therapeutic work.
