Clients don’t need any prior experience playing music or singing to fully benefit from music therapy.

Many different techniques can be used depending on the needs and strengths of the client. Instrumental improvisation can help the client communicate non-verbally, especially when words are not the best tool. Improvisational song writing can be used to create a framework for supporting emotional states.
Weaving the words and stories of a client into a song can help to validate and transform the client's experiences. Singing familiar songs can provide a catalyst for intellectually and emotionally stimulating discussions.

Music psychotherapy uses music within a therapeutic relationship to sustain, restore, and/ or improve emotional, cognitive, and physical health. Music is a powerful tool when working with older adults who suffer from memory loss as musical idioms and songs trigger memory and its accompanying emotions.
